DevLog 1.1: Play

Game Description:

  • Our game aims to explore the lived experience of the countless refugees that wander the earth. These experiences are often only felt through confrontation. The game therefore confronts the player by simulating an over exaggerated version of a citizenship test and explores themes of equality and human dignity. The game is a deceivingly simple quiz, but the questions and answers are absurdist or surreal, which gives the player a feeling of disorientation and dehumanization. The game’s aesthetic is inspired by 70s modernism and brutalism since it references early surveillance and the GDR. It also takes inspiration from the art by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, “Colony Howl”, in the way the game places you in an alternative world, where things are a little off, but still known to us. The gameplay takes ideas from flash games like the Impossible Quiz, and the game Papers, Please, and mixes them into a horror/dystopian style game. Instead of a health-bar, we use audio to further disturb and stress the player, this feature also makes the game more realistic and less game-like. This setting works in tandem with the games mechanics to further illustrate the message of the game.
